All praise and adoration are due to Allah, the Exalted, as He is pleased with and worthy of being praised. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger.

\n\n\n\n

Indeed, Allah has blessed this Ummah with countless blessings; blessings that cannot be enumerated or measured. Among the greatest of these blessings is that Allah عزوجل sent to this Ummah His Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ, with guidance and His Noble Book, the Qur’an, which is a light and guidance for whoever Allah wills to guide through it.

\n\n\n\n

Among the greatest obligations upon this Ummah is to love the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This love is not merely a claim of the tongue; rather, it is a love that manifests itself through obedience, following, submission, and adherence to his Sunnah.

\n\n\n\n

THE OBLIGATION OF LOVING THE MESSENGER ﷺ

\n\n\n\n

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

\n\n\n\n

By Him in Whose Hands my life is, none of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father and his children. By Him in Whose Hands my life is, none of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father and his children.
\n

\n\n\n\n

This hadith demonstrates the tremendous status of loving the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. His love is an essential part of true faith.

\n\n\n\n

But what does genuine love for the Prophet ﷺ mean?

\n\n\n\n

True love for him cannot merely be expressed through words, emotions, gatherings, poems, or claims. Rather, true love demands that a person follows what he ﷺ commanded, adheres to his Sunnah, imitates his guidance, and avoids introducing into the religion that which he neither taught nor practised.

\n\n\n\n

Allah عزوجل says:

\n\n\n\n

\n
Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.’ And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [Qur’an 3:31]
\n

\n\n\n\n

Thus, love is demonstrated through following.

\n\n\n\n

THE BEST GUIDANCE IS THE GUIDANCE OF MUHAMMAD ﷺ

\n\n\n\n

Jabir bin Abdullah رضي الله عنهما reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon, his eyes would become red, his voice would rise, and his anger would increase. He would warn the people and say:

\n\n\n\n

The best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. And the most evil of affairs are newly invented matters, and every innovation is misguidance.
\n

\n\n\n\n

Likewise, al-Irbadi ibn Sariyah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once led them in prayer and then delivered a lengthy exhortation that caused the eyes to shed tears and the hearts to tremble.

\n\n\n\n

A man then said:

\n\n\n\n

“O Messenger of Allah, it seems as though this is a farewell exhortation, so what do you enjoin us with?”

\n\n\n\n

The Prophet ﷺ said:

\n\n\n\n

\n
I enjoin you to fear Allah, and to hear and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave is appointed over you. Indeed, whoever among you lives after me will see much disagreement. So adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Caliphs. Hold firmly to it and cling to it with your molar teeth. Beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance. [Sunan Abi Dawud, 4607]

\n\n\n\n

This is a clear instruction from the Messenger ﷺ: when disagreement and trials arise, the way of safety is not to invent new practices, but to return firmly to his Sunnah and the way of the rightly guided Caliphs.

\n\n\n\n

THE CELEBRATION OF THE PROPHET’S BIRTH: IS IT AN EXPRESSION OF LOVE?

\n\n\n\n

Among the practices that have become widespread among some Muslims is the celebration of the day on which the Prophet ﷺ was born, commonly referred to as Mawlid.

\n\n\n\n

Those who participate in such celebrations may claim that their intention is to demonstrate love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

\n\n\n\n

But a fundamental question must be asked:

\n\n\n\n

Can true love of the Messenger ﷺ be demonstrated by doing something that he ﷺ did not do, did not command, and did not teach his Companions to do?

\n\n\n\n

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lived among his Companions. They loved him more than anyone who came after them could possibly claim to love him. They sacrificed their wealth, families, comfort, and even their lives for his sake.

\n\n\n\n

Yet neither the Prophet ﷺ nor Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, nor the rest of the Companions رضي الله عنهم established an annual celebration of his birth.

\n\n\n\n

Likewise, the generations whom the Prophet ﷺ praised for their excellence did not establish such a celebration.

\n\n\n\n

If celebrating his birthday were a means of drawing closer to Allah and an expression of love that Allah legislated, the Companions would have preceded us in it, and the Prophet ﷺ would have taught them its manner.

\n\n\n\n

Their absence from such a practice is therefore something that deserves serious reflection.

\n\n\n\n

LOVE IS NOT MERELY A CLAIM

\n\n\n\n

A person may say, “I love the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.“

\n\n\n\n

But the reality of that love is tested by one’s actions.

\n\n\n\n

The Prophet ﷺ said:

\n\n\n\n

\n
None of you truly believes until his desires are in accordance with what I have brought. [Hadith 41, an-Nawawi’s Forty Hadith]
\n

\n\n\n\n

Therefore, genuine love requires a believer to prefer the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ over his own desires, customs, emotions, and newly introduced practices.

\n\n\n\n

True love means:

\n\n\n\n

• following his Sunnah;
• obeying his commands;
• believing what he informed us of;
• avoiding what he prohibited;
• worshipping Allah in the manner he taught;
• and abandoning religious practices that he did not legislate.

\n\n\n\n

Love of the Prophet ﷺ is not proven by opposing his guidance. Rather, it is proven by submitting to it.

\n\n\n\n

THE DANGER OF FOLLOWING PREVIOUS NATIONS

\n\n\n\n

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also warned this Ummah against blindly following the paths of those who came before it.

\n\n\n\n

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

\n\n\n\n

\n
“You will follow the ways of those who came before you, handspan by handspan and cubit by cubit, so much so that even if they entered the hole of a mastigure, you would follow them.”
\n\n\n\n
The Companions asked:
\n\n\n\n
“O Messenger of Allah, do you mean the Jews and the Christians?”
\n\n\n\n
He ﷺ replied:
\n\n\n\n
“Who else?” [Sahih al-Bukhari, 3456]
\n

\n\n\n\n

This warning teaches us that Muslims must be extremely careful not to imitate religious practices originating outside the revelation or introduce into Islam practices based upon the customs of other religions.

\n\n\n\n

The Prophet ﷺ came to distinguish the Ummah through revelation and the Sunnah, not to make it dependent upon the religious practices of previous nations.

\n\n\n\n

A WARNING TO EVERY BELIEVER

\n\n\n\n

The issue is therefore not simply about a ceremony or a gathering. It is about a greater principle:

\n\n\n\n

Will we worship Allah according to revelation, or according to what we think is good?

\n\n\n\n

Islam is not built upon what our emotions consider beautiful, nor upon what society has become accustomed to. Worship requires evidence.

\n\n\n\n

Allah عزوجل says:

\n\n\n\n

\n
So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet’s order, lest fitnah strike them or a painful punishment. [Qur’an 24:63]
\n

\n\n\n\n

This verse should cause every believer to reflect deeply.

\n\n\n\n

The Messenger ﷺ was sent to be followed, not merely praised.

\n\n\n\n

He was sent to be obeyed, not merely remembered.

\n\n\n\n

He was sent to be loved, and the greatest evidence of that love is following his guidance ﷺ.

\n\n\n\n

Therefore, whoever truly loves the Messenger of Allah ﷺ should strive to learn his Sunnah, revive it, practise it, teach it, and defend it. He should also distance himself from innovations and religious practices that have no foundation in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah.

\n\n\n\n

THE PATH OF TRUE LOVE

\n\n\n\n

Let us therefore renew our love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ џ not merely through words, but through action.

\n\n\n\n

Let us read his biography.

\n\n\n\n

Let us learn his Sunnah.

\n\n\n\n

Let us send abundant authentic salawat upon him.

\n\n\n\n

Let us obey his commands.

\n\n\n\n

Let us imitate his noble character.

\n\n\n\n

Let us teach our families and communities his guidance.

\n\n\n\n

And let us hold firmly to what he ﷺ left behind for this Ummah.

\n\n\n\n

For the greatest testimony of love is not simply to say:

\n\n\n\n

“I love Muhammad ﷺ.“

\n\n\n\n

Rather, it is to live in a manner that says:

\n\n\n\n

“I love Muhammad ﷺ, therefore I follow him.”

\n\n\n\n

May Allah grant us sincere love for His Messenger ﷺ, make us firm upon his Sunnah, protect us from misguidance and religious innovations, and grant us the ability to worship Him according to the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah.

\n\n\n\n

May Allah resurrect us among the followers of Muhammad ﷺ and grant us his companionship in Jannah.

\n\n\n\n

اللهم صل وسلم وبارك على نبينا، محمد وعلى آله وصحبه ومن تبعهم بإحسان إلى يوم الدين.

\n\n\n\n

سبحانك اللهم، وبحمدك أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت، أستغفرك وأتوب إليك.

Every generation is blessed with individuals who choose to live beyond themselves—people whose greatest achievements are not the awards they receive, but the lives they transform. They are the mentors who give their time when no one is watching, the leaders who quietly shoulder responsibilities so that others may flourish, and the teachers whose legacy is written in the success stories of those they have guided.

This week’s Academic Spotlight celebrates one such individual. A man whose commitment to excellence is matched only by his unwavering devotion to service; whose influence extends far beyond the lecture halls into the hearts and minds of countless students; and whose years of sacrifice, mentorship, and selfless leadership have inspired a culture of academic excellence within the Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim community.

It is with great honour that we present Olakitan Abdul-Malik Gbolahan, fondly known as Wisdom.

\n\n\n\n

There are individuals whose influence cannot be measured merely by their titles or achievements, but by the countless lives they have quietly shaped through consistent sacrifice, selfless service, and an unwavering commitment to the growth of others. Olakitan Abdul-Malik Gbolahan—fondly known as Wisdom—is one such individual. To many students, he is more than an exceptional scholar; he is a mentor, a teacher, a leader, and a guiding light whose dedication to academic excellence and student development has left a lasting mark on the Obafemi Awolowo University community.

\n\n\n\n

A Part V student in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Wisdom has distinguished himself through both outstanding academic performance and exemplary leadership. A two-time recipient of the UNIFEMGA Scholarship and the Omotayo Adegboye Foundation Scholarship—an initiative of an OAU alumnus—he has consistently demonstrated excellence throughout his academic journey. His leadership story began early, serving as Head Boy in primary school and later Assistant Head Boy in secondary school. Today, as the Director of Studies of MSSN OAU, he continues a legacy of service, investing countless hours in mentoring, teaching, and guiding students towards academic and personal excellence.

\n\n\n\n

For Wisdom, teaching is more than an activity—it is a calling. He believes that explaining concepts to others deepens his own understanding more effectively than conventional studying. Rather than spending endless hours reading, he deliberately studies when his mind is most productive and spends much of his time helping others succeed academically. Beyond the classroom, he also explores opportunities in cryptocurrency and blockchain as a side hustle, reflecting his curiosity and willingness to embrace emerging technologies.

\n\n\n\n

Outside academics, Wisdom enjoys watching action movies and is a devoted Chelsea supporter. While his disciplined nature often gives first-time acquaintances the impression that he is strict or difficult, those who know him soon discover a warm, approachable, and easy-going personality. Interestingly, if engineering had not been his path, he says he would have pursued a career in Medicine and Surgery.

\n\n\n\n

With a journey defined by excellence, service, and an enduring passion for uplifting others, we sat down with Wisdom to explore the experiences, principles, and moments that have shaped his remarkable story. From his academic journey and leadership philosophy to the lessons he has learned along the way, this conversation offers valuable insights for every student striving for excellence and purposeful living.

Let’s dive into the conversation.

\n\n\n\n

Q1: As your tenure as Director of Studies comes to an end, what lessons have you learned about academic excellence and student development that you believe every OAU student should carry with them?

\n\n\n\n

Abdul-Malik: One of the greatest lessons I’ve learnt about academic excellence is that there is no universal formula for success. You must discover what works best for you. Every student learns differently, and the moment you understand how you learn most effectively, you can maximise your potential. At the end of the day, your academic success rests largely in your own hands. Be intentional, be disciplined, and take responsibility for your growth.

\n\n\n\n

When it comes to student development, my advice is simple: don’t be a loner. University is more than lectures and examinations; it’s also about the relationships you build. Create meaningful connections, invest in genuine friendships, and don’t isolate yourself. Be willing to serve others whenever you have the opportunity, because service has a way of opening doors you never expected. As the saying goes, once you serve, you will be served. The value you give to others often finds its way back to you in remarkable ways.

\n\n\n\n

Q2: You’ve earned a reputation for academic depth, even being nicknamed “Wisdom” by your classmates. Beyond intelligence, what qualities do you think truly distinguish students who consistently excel from those who merely study hard?

\n\n\n\n

Abdul-Malik: The nickname “Wisdom” didn’t come because I considered myself the smartest person in class. It came from something much simpler—I was given the name by a lecturer because of my curiosity. Whenever I didn’t understand something, I spoke up and asked questions. To me, there is no such thing as a stupid question. I’d rather ask and learn than remain silent and confused. In fact, there were times people laughed at me for asking questions, but I never allowed that to stop me. Looking back, that curiosity became one of my greatest strengths.

\n\n\n\n

Over time, I also discovered a learning method that worked exceptionally well for me: teaching others. Before you can confidently teach a concept, you must first understand the why and the how behind it. That means reading early, reading consistently, and seeking true understanding instead of merely preparing for examinations. I’ve also learnt not to study when I’m mentally exhausted. I read when my mind is at its optimal level because that’s when I absorb and retain information best.

\n\n\n\n

Teaching has always deepened my own understanding. Every time I explain a concept to someone else, I uncover new insights and reinforce what I’ve learnt. That’s why I often say I don’t just study to know—I study so I can teach.

\n\n\n\n

Above all, every student should take time to discover what works best for them. Don’t allow peer pressure or even the volume of the syllabus to dictate how you learn. Success isn’t about copying someone else’s strategy; it’s about finding a method that suits you and committing to it with consistency and discipline.

\n\n\n\n

Q3: Over the course of your leadership, you’ve interacted with students across different levels and academic abilities. Looking back, what are the most common mistakes you’ve observed students make, and what practical steps can they take to avoid them?

\n\n\n\n

Abdul-Malik: Two mistakes stand out to me more than any others.

\n\n\n\n

The first is not speaking up when they need help. Many students keep struggling in silence until it becomes too late. It’s possible to be hardworking and still not be making progress. If you’ve been putting in the effort but your results aren’t improving, don’t just keep doing the same thing and hope for a different outcome. Speak up. Talk to a friend, a senior, a lecturer, or someone who can guide you. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign that you’re committed to getting better.

\n\n\n\n

The second mistake is trying to figure everything out alone. Some students believe they have to discover every strategy by themselves, but that’s an unnecessary and often frustrating path. There are people who have walked the journey before you, made mistakes, learnt valuable lessons, and are willing to share them. Ignoring that wealth of experience only makes the journey more difficult.

\n\n\n\n

The solution is straightforward. Speak up early whenever you realise you need help. Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed or until examinations are around the corner. The earlier you seek guidance, the easier it is to get back on track.

\n\n\n\n

Also, intentionally reach out to your seniors. Don’t limit yourself to just one person because everyone has their own approach and unique insights. Talk to five or six seniors if you can. Learn from their different experiences, compare their methods, and then identify what works best for you. You don’t have to copy anyone completely, but you can learn something valuable from everyone. In the end, the goal is to build a system that fits your own strengths and helps you become a better student.

\n\n\n\n

Q4: If you were designing a blueprint for a student determined to graduate with academic distinction, what daily, weekly, or semester-long habits would be non-negotiable in that blueprint?

\n\n\n\n

Abdul-Malik: If I had to design a blueprint for academic distinction, there are three habits I would consider absolutely non-negotiable.

\n\n\n\n

The first is building relationships with seniors. Never underestimate the value of learning from those who have successfully walked the path before you. Reach out to them, ask questions, seek advice, and learn from their experiences. Every senior has a different approach or “hack” that worked for them. Gather those insights, reflect on them, and adopt the ones that best suit your own learning style.

\n\n\n\n

The second is having a consistent reading routine. Don’t read randomly—have a specific time dedicated to studying. For some people, that may be early in the morning; for others, it could be late at night. Personally, I believe you should study when your mind is at its optimal level. During demanding semesters, an overnight reading schedule might work well, while in less stressful periods, you can choose a more flexible routine. The important thing is consistency, not the time itself.

\n\n\n\n

Finally, make teaching others a habit. One of the best ways to master a subject is to explain it to someone else. When you help people academically, it’s beneficial for both of you. They gain understanding, and your own knowledge becomes even stronger because teaching forces you to think more deeply, identify gaps in your understanding, and communicate concepts clearly. In my experience, teaching has always been one of the most effective forms of learning.

\n\n\n\n

If you can consistently learn from others, maintain a disciplined reading routine, and intentionally teach what you know, you’ll be building habits that not only improve your grades but also develop you into a more confident and well-rounded scholar.

\n\n\n\n

Q5: Imagine a student reads this interview five years from now. If you could leave them with one enduring piece of advice—something you hope they’ll remember whenever they face academic pressure or uncertainty—what would you want that message to be?

\n\n\n\n

Abdul-Malik: My message is simple: believe in yourself. There is no such thing as an “average” student. Human potential is far greater than we often realise, and if you truly set your mind to achieving something, you can accomplish it. Never allow labels, past failures, or other people’s opinions to define what you’re capable of becoming.

\n\n\n\n

Confidence is powerful. When you believe in your ability to learn, grow, and overcome challenges, you approach every obstacle with a different mindset. That confidence, combined with consistent effort, will take you much farther than you can imagine.

\n\n\n\n

At the same time, remember that you don’t have to go through difficult moments alone. If it ever feels like nothing is working despite your best efforts, don’t suffer in silence. Reach out. Ask questions. Seek guidance from your friends, seniors, lecturers, or mentors. Sometimes, the breakthrough you’re looking for begins with a simple conversation.

\n\n\n\n

Finally, I pray that Allah makes your journey easy, grants you beneficial knowledge, and blesses your efforts with success. No matter where you are today, keep moving forward—you are capable of achieving far more than you think.

\n\n\n\n

Q6: People call you “Wisdom.” What’s the funniest or most memorable moment that nickname has led to?

\n\n\n\n

Abdul-Malik: One moment I’ll never forget happened during a lecture. The lecturer was clearly upset and started asking questions row by row. When he got to my row, he surprisingly skipped me. Immediately, my coursemates shouted, “Sir, ask him!” Then the lecturer said, “He’s Wisdom!” The funny part was that I didn’t actually know the answer to that particular question.

\n\n\n\n

Q7: Suppose you could have a one-hour study session with any scholar, scientist, or historical figure—living or dead. Who would you choose, and what would you ask them?

\n\n\n\n

Abdul-Malik: I would choose Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Throughout his life, he endured immense trials, opposition, and hardship with remarkable patience, wisdom, and resilience. If I had the opportunity to spend an hour with him, I would ask:

\n\n\n\n

“When life pushes us to our limits and frustration begins to overwhelm us, how do we remain patient, composed, and steadfast without losing ourselves?”

\n\n\n\n

I believe the answer to that question would be a guide not only for academic life but for every challenge we face.

\n\n\n\n

Q8: Would you rather lose your memories of the past or be unable to make new memories?

\n\n\n\n

Abdul-Malik: I would choose to stop making new memories. My past has shaped who I am today. Every success, failure, lesson, and experience has contributed to my growth and helped build my character. I wouldn’t want to lose those experiences because they define my journey. While it would be difficult not to create new memories, I’d rather hold on to the ones that made me the person I am today.

\n\n\n\n

Final Advice

\n\n\n\n

Abdul-Malik: One piece of advice I’d love to leave with every student is this: be intentional about the people you surround yourself with. Make good friends, build meaningful relationships, and connect wisely. The company you keep has a profound influence on the person you become.

\n\n\n\n

Be willing to serve others and make a positive difference in people’s lives. Service is never a one-way street. The impact you make in others eventually comes back to shape and enrich your own life. As you help others grow, you also grow yourself. Never underestimate the value of investing in people, because today’s follower can become tomorrow’s leader.

\n\n\n\n

OAU is a challenging environment. It will stretch you, test your resilience, and at times make you question your abilities. But don’t allow OAU to change who you are—instead, let it build you into a stronger, wiser, and more resilient version of yourself.

\n\n\n\n

Above all, never forget your roots. Remember where you came from, remember the values that define you, and always remember Allah. No matter how successful you become or how difficult the journey gets, hold firmly to your faith. It will remain your greatest source of strength and guidance.

This week’s Academic Spotlight features Badmus Aminat Adesola, a Part IV Accounting student at Obafemi Awolowo University whose academic journey is marked by excellence, consistency, and remarkable achievements.

\n\n\n\n

A Chartered Accountant and the current Internal Auditor of MSSN OAU, Aminat has distinguished herself both in the classroom and on the national stage. She emerged as a winner of the National Tax Debate Competition, was a finalist in the EY Tax Professional of the Year Competition, and represented Obafemi Awolowo University at the Taxation Challenge Nigeria (South-West Region), where her team secured first place and is now preparing for the national finals.

\n\n\n\n

Her commitment to academic excellence has also earned her several prestigious awards, including being a two-time recipient of the Dallas OAU Alumni Scholarship, a two-time UNIFEMGA Scholar, and a two-time ICAN Prize Award winner.

\n\n\n\n

Beyond her impressive résumé, Aminat is someone who values quiet reflection, continuous learning, and intentional personal growth. In this edition of Academic Spotlight, she shares the experiences, habits, and lessons that have shaped her journey, offering practical insights and encouragement for every student striving for excellence.

With an impressive record of academic excellence and leadership, we sat down with Aminat to learn more about the journey behind her achievements. From study strategies and competition experiences to personal growth and advice for students, she shares valuable lessons that have guided her path.

\n\n\n\n

Let’s dive into the conversation.

\n\n\n\n

Q1: Many students believe excelling academically requires sacrificing almost everything else. Yet you’ve managed to maintain outstanding grades, participate in competitions, and serve as the Internal Auditor of MSSN OAU. What systems or habits have enabled you to balance these responsibilities without compromising excellence?

\n\n\n\n

Badmus Aminat: I don’t think there’s one strategy that works for everyone. From the outside, it may look easy to balance academics, competitions, and other responsibilities, but honestly, it’s not. At some point, one responsibility will demand more attention than the others.

\n\n\n\n

Above all, I thank Allah for making the journey easier for me. I always pray for barakah in my time because I believe that with Allah’s blessings, you can achieve much more than your own effort alone. Beyond that, I try to prioritise what is most important at every point, stay organised, and avoid unnecessary distractions. Consistency has helped me more than trying to be perfect.

\n\n\n\n

Q2: Looking back, what is one mistake or misconception about studying that held you back initially, and how did overcoming it change your academic performance?

\n\n\n\n

Badmus Aminat: One misconception I had was believing that I had to do overnight reading to succeed because that was what many people told me. The problem was that I’m not a night reader, so I found it difficult and thought I was at a disadvantage.

\n\n\n\n

With time, I realised that success is not about when you read but how disciplined and consistent you are. Once I stopped comparing my study pattern with others and focused on what worked for me, my academic performance improved.

\n\n\n\n

Q3: You’ve represented yourself in various competitions within your field. Beyond winning or participating, what lessons from those experiences have made you a better student and future professional, and how can other students begin preparing themselves for similar opportunities?

\n\n\n\n

Badmus Aminat: The first thing I would say is: put yourself out there. Don’t shy away from opportunities, and don’t be afraid to let people know what you’re capable of. I was able to participate in my latest competition because I had consistently put myself out there, and over time, my coursemates and lecturers came to believe in my abilities and recommended me for the opportunity.

\n\n\n\n

My advice is to keep striving to be better and see yourself as worthy of every opportunity that comes your way. Never look down on yourself or think you’re less than others. If someone else can do it, you can too. We are all ordinary people, and no one is born more special than another. Believe in yourself, prepare yourself, and be ready when opportunities come.

\n\n\n\n

Q4: Every high-performing student has moments when motivation is low or things don’t go as planned. During such periods, what keeps you disciplined and consistent, especially when the results are not immediately visible?

\n\n\n\n

Badmus Aminat: I believe people often see the achievements but not the struggles behind them. For example, if I apply for ten opportunities and only get two, most people will only notice the two successes. They don’t see the rejections, the waiting, or the disappointments along the way.

\n\n\n\n

One verse that keeps me going is Allah’s saying:

إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَنْ يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ

“His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.” (Qur’an 36:82)

\n\n\n\n

This verse reminds me that Allah is in control of every outcome. I do my best, make the effort, and leave the results to Him. At the end of the day, I have accepted that not everything will go my way, and that’s okay because Allah knows what is best.

\n\n\n\n

Q5: If you had just ten minutes to mentor a Part I student who genuinely wants to graduate with a First Class, what practical advice would you give them, and what habits would you encourage them to develop from their very first semester?

\n\n\n\n

Badmus Aminat: The first thing I would tell them is to build a strong relationship with Allah because He is the source of all success.

\n\n\n\n

Secondly, spare no effort in pursuing excellence. In my Part I, I started searching for scholarship opportunities and realised that many of them required outstanding academic performance. That became a strong motivation for me to stay committed to my studies.

\n\n\n\n

I also looked up to some of the top students in my department. I wanted to be like them, so I learned from their habits and allowed their achievements to inspire me. Interestingly, today, some of those same people now look up to me, which reminds me that consistent effort truly pays off.

\n\n\n\n

Finally, put yourself out there, strive for excellence, and choose your friends wisely. Surround yourself with people who will challenge you to grow academically, morally, and spiritually, not people who will make you settle for less.

Q6: If your academic journey had a movie title, what would it be and why?

Why?

\n\n\n\n

I think The Courage to Try best describes my academic journey. I’ve never been afraid to take chances or pursue opportunities, even when I wasn’t sure how everything would work out. Some things worked, while others didn’t, but each experience taught me something valuable.

\n\n\n\n

For example, financial challenges almost stopped me from starting my ICAN journey. I didn’t have everything figured out, but I decided to begin anyway and trust the process. Today, by Allah’s grace, I have completed it. Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t allow fear or uncertainty to stop me.

\n\n\n\n

My journey has taught me that you don’t always need to see the finish line before taking the first step. Sometimes, all you need is the courage to try and the determination to keep going.

\n\n\n\n

As our conversation drew to a close, we asked Aminat to leave one final message for every student striving for excellence. Her response was a thoughtful reminder that true success is not measured only by achievements, but also by the person we become in the process.

Final Advice

\n\n\n\n

One piece of advice I would leave with every student is to make self-assessment a regular habit. One quote I really love says, “When you look in the mirror, you should love what you see.”

\n\n\n\n

For me, that means being honest with yourself. Regularly assess your progress, your character, your habits, and your relationship with Allah. Don’t deceive yourself about where you are, but also take time to appreciate how far you’ve come.

\n\n\n\n

When you genuinely love the person you are becoming, it gives you the motivation to keep growing, keep improving, and become an even better version of yourself.

Meet Khadijat Sunmola.

\n\n\n\n

Khadijat Sunmola is a Part V student in the Department of Soil Science and Land Resource Management, Faculty of Agriculture.

\n\n\n\n

She’s a Spoken Word Poet, a Social Impact Advocate, and a Debater.

\n\n\n\n

She received a Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research. She was the 1st Runner-up in a debate competition in 2020 and the 1st Runner-up in the Yinka Odumakin Debate Competition. She was also recognized among the 50 Most Outstanding Great Women for two consecutive years.

\n\n\n\n

She was the President of the Soil Science Students’ Association in 2024 and also served as a Co-Campus Director for a Millennium Fellowship in 2023. She has been honoured to perform both nationally and internationally.

\n\n\n\n

She is also a recipient of the OAU Star Award.

\n\n\n\n

Now that you’ve met our Spotlight Personality of the Week, let’s dive into a conversation with her as she shares insights from her academic journey, leadership experiences, personal growth, and the lessons that have guided her path to excellence.

\n\n\n\n

Q1. Looking back on your academic journey, what would you say has been the biggest contributor to your success?

\n\n\n\n

Khadijat Sunmola: I’d say Almighty Allah, then my father has been the biggest contributor to my success. I had always wanted to study Medical Rehabilitation, but I was transferred to Soil Science. At first, I was discouraged and even considered rejecting the admission. However, my dad told me, “Khadijat, you are outstanding; you will stand out in this field.” I trusted his advice and decided to give it my best.

\n\n\n\n

Over time, I realized that success is not always about where you start but how much value you are willing to create wherever you find yourself. I began to embrace my discipline, explore opportunities within it, and develop genuine interest in research and agricultural development.

\n\n\n\n

Another major contributor has been my doggedness and hard work. I read a lot because I know where I am going. I remain focused on my goals, and even when things become difficult, I keep pushing. I have also been blessed with mentors, supportive friends, and opportunities that challenged me to grow beyond my comfort zone.

\n\n\n\n

Q2. What challenges have you faced in your academic journey, and how did you overcome them?

\n\n\n\n

Khadijat Sunmola: One of my biggest challenges has been balancing academics with leadership responsibilities and extracurricular engagements.

\n\n\n\n

As a student leader, debater, spoken word poet, and social impact advocate, there were periods when multiple responsibilities demanded my attention simultaneously. Managing projects, attending meetings, preparing for competitions, and still maintaining strong academic performance was not always easy.

\n\n\n\n

I overcame this challenge through effective time management, proper planning, and setting clear priorities. I learned how to maximize my productive hours, avoid procrastination, and stay organized. Most importantly, I constantly reminded myself that excellence is not about choosing one area over another but learning how to give your best in all areas without compromising your values or goals.

\n\n\n\n

Q3. What study habits, routines, or strategies have helped you maintain academic excellence?

\n\n\n\n

Khadijat Sunmola: I’d say the first thing is knowing yourself. I understand how I learn best. For example, I am not a nocturnal person, so I do not force myself to read at night. Instead, I maximize my daytime hours because that is when I am most productive.

\n\n\n\n

Secondly, I attend classes consistently. I do not miss classes except when absolutely necessary because lectures often provide clarity that textbooks alone may not give.

\n\n\n\n

I also make use of personal notes, revise regularly instead of waiting until examinations approach, and ensure that I understand concepts rather than merely memorizing them.

\n\n\n\n

Lastly, I surround myself with like-minded people. Being around individuals who are focused, ambitious, and growth-oriented helps me stay motivated and accountable.

\n\n\n\n

Q4. Beyond academics, what skills or experiences have had the greatest impact on your personal and professional development?

\n\n\n\n

Khadijat Sunmola: Leadership, spoken word poetry, and debating have had the greatest impact on my development.

\n\n\n\n

Leadership taught me responsibility, emotional intelligence, teamwork, and how to make decisions under pressure. Serving as President of my department exposed me to different challenges and helped me develop confidence and resilience.

\n\n\n\n

Debating sharpened my critical thinking, public speaking, research, and communication skills. It taught me how to analyze issues from different perspectives and confidently express my ideas.

\n\n\n\n

Spoken word poetry gave me a platform to use my voice for advocacy, social impact, and storytelling. Through poetry, I have been able to inspire people, address societal issues, and connect with diverse audiences both locally and internationally.

\n\n\n\n

These experiences have shaped me into a more confident, versatile, and purpose-driven individual.

\n\n\n\n

Q5. If you had the opportunity to advise younger students aspiring to excel academically, what three pieces of advice would you give them?

\n\n\n\n

Khadijat Sunmola:

\n\n\n\n

Develop genuine passion for your course of study. It becomes easier to excel when you intentionally seek knowledge rather than merely study to pass examinations.
Think about what you can contribute to your field. Do not focus only on obtaining a degree; focus on developing solutions, ideas, and innovations that can create impact.
Think about the opportunities your field offers. Every discipline has value and possibilities. Explore them, build relevant skills, and position yourself for growth.

\n\n\n\n

Additionally, I would encourage students not to limit themselves to academics alone. Build leadership capacity, communication skills, and meaningful networks because success is often a combination of knowledge, character, and relationships.

Khadijat Sunmola: One lesson that has significantly influenced my life is that where you start does not determine where you will finish. Sometimes life may not go according to our plans, but excellence is still possible when we embrace opportunities, remain resilient, and continue to give our best. That lesson helped me turn what initially seemed like a disappointment into a journey filled with purpose, impact, and growth.

Life is returning to normal at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as students officially resume academic activities today, Tuesday, May 19, 2026, following a three-week mid-semester break triggered by student protests over the university’s newly introduced transportation system.

\n\n\n\n

On the 28th of April 2026, students of OAU took to the streets in protest, expressing frustration over a newly introduced campus transportation system which many described as ineffective, inadequate, and poorly implemented.

\n\n\n\n

The protests, however, later escalated into disruptive conduct, including the closure of the campus gate, obstruction of major access roads, and harassment of road users.

\n\n\n\n

In response, the University Management, through a release by the Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, announced that the Senate had approved an immediate mid-semester break for all students.

\n\n\n\n

The decision was described as necessary to restore order, ensure the safety of the university community, and create room for meaningful dialogue between the administration and relevant stakeholders.

\n\n\n\n

At its Special Meeting held on Thursday, 14th May, 2026, the Senate confirmed that the three-week moratorium was introduced to allow the administration address concerns surrounding the transportation system and engage relevant stakeholders toward resolving the issues.

\n\n\n\n

According to the official decision extract, all matters arising from the situation have now been sufficiently addressed.

\n\n\n\n

During the break, the University also introduced a new student e-portal, which initially came with challenges relating to login access, school fee payment, and course registration. New directives were subsequently issued to guide students through the payment and registration processes.

\n\n\n\n

Students are advised to take note of the following deadlines:

Staylites (Returning Students): School fee payment deadline is Friday, May 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM.

\n\n\n\n

Freshers (New Students): Tuition fee payment window closes on Thursday, May 29, 2026, at 11:59 PM.

\n\n\n\n

With lectures resuming today, the Revised Academic Calendar for the Rain Semester 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 Academic Sessions indicates that lectures will continue until July 24, while Rain Semester examinations are scheduled to commence on August 3, 2026.

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Obafemi Awolowo University branch, extends heartfelt congratulations to Muslim graduands among the newly inducted medical and dental doctors at the College of Health Sciences induction ceremony held on Monday, 18th May 2026 at Oduduwa Hall.

The College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, on Monday, 18th May, inducted 125 graduating medical students and 32 graduating dental students at Oduduwa Hall.

\n\n\n\n

The ceremony featured oath-taking, welcome addresses, words of encouragement and award presentations, with the presence of the Vice Chancellor, College Provost, representatives of MDCAN and MWAN, the Vice Chancellor of Kings University alongside other medical professionals.

\n\n\n\n

In her address, the Provost, Professor Bernice O. Adegbehingbe, described the set as exceptional and revealed that sixteen doctors graduated with honours, while reminding the inductees that the medical profession is a sacred calling rooted in compassion, discipline, and service to humanity.

\n\n\n\n

Among the inductees were 23 Muslim students, further reaffirming that Islam is not a limitation to excellence, but a guiding force for discipline, perseverance, and purpose.

\n\n\n\n

In recognition of outstanding academic excellence, Dr. Bolu Akindele and Dr. Akande Ibukunoluwa emerged as the best graduating students in Medicine and Dentistry respectively, and were honoured with awards by the University and MWAN.

\n\n\n\n

On this note, MSSN OAU congratulates the Muslim medical and dental graduands and prays for excellence and fulfillment in their professional careers.
